Canadian Petition to Revoke Elon Musk’s Citizenship Garners Over 250,000 Signatures

Canadian petition to revoke elon musk’s citizenship garners over 250,000 signatures

A parliamentary petition in Canada urging the revocation of Elon Musk's citizenship has surpassed 250,000 signatures.

The petition accuses Musk of undermining Canada's national interests through his political affiliations and influence over global policy.

Musk’s Ties to Trump Spark Outcry

The petition, addressed to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, claims Musk's ties to U.S. President Donald Trump, who has proposed a 25% tariff on Canadian imports and the annexation of Canada, threaten Canadian sovereignty.

The petitioners argue that Musk’s alignment with Trump contradicts Canadian values and interests.

Musk’s Dual Citizenship and Influence on Global Policies

Musk, who holds citizenship in South Africa, Canada, and the U.S., is accused of using his influence and wealth to affect elections and global policies.

The petition states that Musk’s increasing involvement with Trump’s administration makes him a member of a foreign government working against Canada’s interests.

In response to the petition, Musk stated on his social media platform X that “Canada is not a real country.” CNN has reached out to Musk’s representatives for a statement.

The Legal Implications of Revoking Musk’s Citizenship

While the petition calls for the immediate revocation of Musk’s Canadian passport and dual citizenship, legal experts suggest that the Canadian government cannot revoke Musk's citizenship as it was lawfully obtained.

Musk acquired his Canadian passport as a teenager through his mother, Maye Musk, a Canadian citizen. Later, Musk became a U.S. citizen after arriving on a student visa.

Petition Process and Timeline

The electronic petition, sponsored by NDP MP Charlie Angus, is open until June 20, 2025. After that, it will undergo certification to confirm the legitimacy of signatures before it can be presented to the House of Commons for debate.

The Petition’s Author Responds

Qualia Reed, a sci-fi author from British Columbia, created the petition and clarified its intent.

They emphasized that the petition is not a personal attack on Musk, but a call for accountability from powerful individuals who influence global policies.

Reed expressed surprise at the petition's rapid spread, noting that its purpose is to remind influential figures of their ethical responsibilities.

Citizenship Revocation: A Rare and Controversial Move

Historically, Canada has not revoked citizenship that was lawfully obtained, with a few exceptions. Legal experts point out that revocation would only be possible in cases of fraud or misrepresentation.

Although a 2014 law allowed for revocation in cases of national security offenses, it was repealed in 2017, making Musk’s Canadian citizenship safe from revocation unless new laws were enacted.

A Symbolic Gesture

While the petition may not result in the revocation of Musk’s citizenship, it highlights growing frustration over the influence of powerful figures like Musk and their alignment with controversial political movements.

The petition serves as a symbolic call for accountability in the global arena.
