Cruise Ship Rescues 11 Refugees Adrift in the Gulf of Mexico

The Royal Caribbean cruise ship Brilliance of the Seas rescued 11 refugees stranded in the Gulf of Mexico, between Cuba and Mexico, on Wednesday.

The rescue occurred during a seven-night cruise that departed New Orleans on Saturday, chartered by the LGBT+ vacation company VACAYA.

Distress Call Leads to Rescue Mission

On Wednesday, the ship's captain spotted a boat in the distance, appearing to be in distress. Randle Roper, CEO of VACAYA, who was onboard, recounted that the captain immediately notified him of the situation.

The ship turned around to investigate, dispatching a pilot boat to assist the stranded vessel.

Stranded Refugees in Critical Condition

Roper described the refugees as "malnourished and exhausted" but relieved once onboard the Brilliance of the Seas. The refugees, who had been bailing water out of their boat, were clearly in distress and taking on water.

The ship’s crew acted swiftly to ensure their safety, providing food, water, and medical care.

US Coast Guard Involvement and Refugees’ Next Steps

After the rescue, the US Coast Guard became involved to determine the refugees' next steps.

The group disembarked in Mexico the following day. VACAYA guests onboard the ship offered donations of clothes and funds to assist the refugees.

A Symbol of Solidarity

Roper reflected on the significant symbolism of the rescue, particularly given the intersection of two marginalized groups: the LGBT+ community and refugees.

He emphasized the emotional impact of being part of such a compassionate act.
