Sheinbaum Congratulates Trump
The day before the call, Sheinbaum had congratulated Trump on his victory in the U.S. presidential election. In her message on X, she said, “I express my most sincere congratulations to Donald Trump, who won the presidential election of the United States of America. On behalf of Mexico, our recognition to the American people for the democratic exercise in their election day.”
Future Cooperation Between Mexico and the U.S.
Sheinbaum expressed confidence that both nations would continue working together in a respectful and coordinated manner. She emphasized that both Mexico and the U.S. would maintain dialogue to further the broad bilateral agenda that unites them.
Calm Amid Uncertainty
Before the official announcement of Trump’s victory, Sheinbaum reassured the public, particularly Mexican citizens living in the U.S., that there was no reason for concern.
"Mexico will always move forward. We are a free, independent and sovereign country and there will be good relations with the United States. I am convinced of this," she said during a press conference.
Trump's Past Threats on Tariffs
During his presidential campaign, Trump had threatened to impose a 25% tariff on Mexican goods if illegal immigration wasn't reduced. Despite this, Sheinbaum’s government maintained a neutral stance on the matter, noting that no official position would be taken until the U.S. electoral process was fully concluded.
Sheinbaum’s communication with Trump signified a tone of diplomacy, reinforcing her belief that U.S.-Mexico relations would remain strong, cooperative, and respectful despite any challenges.
