Tesla Recalls 380,000 Vehicles Over Power Steering Assist Failure
Tesla has issued a recall for nearly 380,000 vehicles in the United States following concerns over a power steering assist malfunction that could make steering more difficult, especially at low speeds. The issue has the potential to increase the risk of a crash due to the added steering effort required.

Background and NHTSA Investigation
The recall comes after a year-long investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Some Tesla owners reported experiencing steering failures, with a few unable to turn the wheel and others experiencing increased steering effort. In total, over 50 vehicles were reportedly towed due to these issues.
In late 2023, Reuters reported that tens of thousands of Tesla owners had encountered premature failures in suspension or steering components. These issues, affecting vehicles since 2016, were uncovered through Tesla documents and interviews with customers and former employees.
Details of the Recall
The recall impacts certain 2023 Model 3 sedans and Model Y crossovers equipped with older software versions. Tesla explained that a potential overvoltage failure could overstress motor drive components on the printed circuit board, triggering a steering assist failure.
If this failure occurs while the vehicle is in motion, the steering will remain functional, and a visual alert will be triggered. However, once the car stops, the steering assist may fail entirely, and it will remain disabled once the vehicle starts moving again.
Tesla has identified 3,012 warranty claims related to this issue as of January 10. However, the company clarified that no crashes or fatalities have been reported due to the condition.
Tesla's Response
To address the issue, Tesla has rolled out an over-the-air software update designed to resolve the power steering assist failure.
Impact on Tesla and Recalls in 2025
This recall represents Tesla's second major recall in 2025. In January, Tesla recalled around 239,000 vehicles due to a malfunctioning rear-view camera.
Tesla's stock has seen a slight decline, falling about 10% this year after a strong 2024 performance.
Thanks.
