Mexico prepares backup plans as trump’s tariff threat looms

Mexico is awaiting U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision on whether to impose tariffs, with President Claudia Sheinbaum stating that the country has multiple backup plans in place should the tariffs take effect on Tuesday.

In a Monday press conference, Sheinbaum emphasized that while further details would be provided on Tuesday, Mexico is ready for any outcome.

Plans in Place for Tariff Escalation

Sheinbaum confirmed that Mexico has "Plan B, C, D" in reserve, though she did not elaborate on specifics.

The Mexican government has been in active talks with U.S. officials in Washington, hoping to avoid the tariffs. These discussions have focused on addressing issues such as the flow of synthetic drugs like fentanyl and migrant arrivals at the U.S.-Mexico border, concerns that Trump has cited as justifications for the tariffs.

U.S.-Mexico Relations and Cooperation

Despite the looming threat, Sheinbaum described the meetings in Washington as "cordial," emphasizing the positive coordination between Mexico and the U.S.

She expressed confidence in the ongoing collaboration but also signaled that Mexico would respond swiftly should the tariffs be imposed.

With both nations focused on trade and security, the coming days will reveal whether the negotiations can prevent the tariffs from going into effect.

Thanks.
