Political Advertising’s New Rising Star: Elon Musk, Trump’s Cost-Cutter in Chief

Political advertising’s new rising star: elon musk, trump’s cost-cutter in chief

Elon Musk, the tech billionaire behind Tesla and SpaceX, is becoming a central figure in political advertising, particularly in Democratic campaigns.

From Virginia to Wisconsin, Musk’s role in reducing the federal government’s budget is being used to rally voters and donors. Politicians are seizing on his actions to motivate people, portraying him as a symbol of wealth benefiting at the expense of public services.

Musk's Role in Democratic Ads and Fundraising

A leading Democratic outside group, House Majority Forward, launched ads targeting vulnerable GOP incumbents.

These ads suggest that Republicans are willing to cut health care for children and the elderly to benefit billionaires like Musk. One powerful image includes Musk wielding a chainsaw, a nod to his role in federal spending cuts celebrated during the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC).

Musk also appears in a digital ad campaign from Virginia’s House Democratic Caucus, aiming to expand the party's narrow majority in the state’s House of Delegates.

Additionally, he is featured in ads supporting a liberal judicial candidate in Wisconsin, where an election could shift the state’s Supreme Court balance.

Musk as a Political Liability for Republicans

As the richest person in the world, Musk is proving to be an unexpected political figure. Democratic strategists see him as a "boogeyman," a convenient symbol of cost-cutting moves that may alienate key voters. Recent polling shows Musk's unpopularity, especially among Democratic voters.

A Marist/NPR/PBS poll revealed that 50% of respondents had an unfavorable view of Musk, with only 39% favorable. Furthermore, a Quinnipiac University poll found that 55% of voters believe Musk has too much power in making decisions affecting the U.S.

Musk's Influence on Wisconsin’s Supreme Court Race

In Wisconsin, Musk’s influence is particularly notable in the race for an open seat on the state’s Supreme Court. Musk’s political action committee, America PAC, has spent millions supporting the conservative candidate, Brad Schimel, and opposing liberal candidate Susan Crawford.

This election, set for April 1, is expected to break national spending records for judicial contests, with the outcome potentially flipping the court to conservatives.

Musk's spending in the race is drawing sharp criticism from Democratic groups, which are using it to rally support for Crawford.

Ads accuse Musk of causing chaos in Washington and attempting to "buy" the seat. In turn, Crawford’s campaign has utilized Musk’s involvement to generate grassroots donations.

Impact of Musk's Cost-Cutting Efforts in Virginia

In Virginia, Musk’s role in federal workforce cuts is being leveraged by Democrats to target Republican lawmakers.

The state has over 144,000 federal civilian workers, many of whom could be affected by cuts tied to Musk’s actions. Democrats hope to use Musk’s influence to sway voters in key districts, especially in areas where President Biden won but Republicans are gaining traction.

State Delegate Dan Helmer, who leads campaign efforts for the Virginia House Democrats, called Musk’s cuts a “chainsaw” approach that threatens public service jobs.

However, some strategists warn that focusing too much on Musk may backfire, especially since he has deep pockets and can fund opposition campaigns.

Musk’s Role in the 2024 Midterms

Ahead of the 2024 midterm elections, Democratic groups like House Majority Forward are running ads that accuse Republicans of failing to deliver on promises to lower costs while planning cuts to essential services.

These ads tie Republicans to Musk’s agenda, suggesting that his influence will benefit the wealthy while hurting average Americans.

However, Republicans argue that these ads misrepresent their policy goals, particularly in healthcare. They claim that efforts to find savings will focus on eliminating waste and fraud, not cutting benefits for Medicaid recipients.

Musk's Growing Influence in Political Campaigns

Elon Musk is becoming a central figure in American political campaigns, especially as his role in federal spending cuts gains attention. Democrats are using his actions as a tool to rally their base and fundraise, while Republicans face the challenge of defending their ties to the billionaire.

With Musk’s increasing influence, both parties are seeking to use his name to mobilize voters in key races across the country.
