Following this directive, major technology companies, including Google, Apple, and Microsoft, updated their mapping services to reflect the new designation for users within the United States. Google Maps, for instance, now displays "Gulf of America" to users in the U.S., "Gulf of Mexico" to users in Mexico, and both names to users in other countries.
This change has sparked significant controversy. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has threatened legal action against Google if the original name is not restored, viewing the alteration as an infringement on Mexico's sovereignty.
Additionally, Google has faced criticism for disabling reviews on the "Gulf of America" listing, a move the company says is to prevent off-topic contributions.
Despite the backlash, the new designation remains in place on various platforms within the United States.
The renaming has also been met with opposition from the public. A Marquette University poll found that 71% of respondents opposed the change.
Thanks.
