Mexico’s government is considering a request from Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada, a key leader of the Sinaloa cartel, to be sent back from the U.S. for trial.
President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed the petition was received by Mexico’s consulate in New York.

Sheinbaum added that Mexico’s attorney general is investigating the circumstances surrounding Zambada’s arrest near El Paso, Texas, in July alongside another cartel leader.
While Zambada awaits trial, the Mexican government has questioned how he was detained.
Zambada claims he was kidnapped by JoaquÃn Guzmán López, the son of former cartel leader "El Chapo," and brought to the U.S. under duress. The government has since launched an inquiry into possible treason by those involved in his transfer.
In his petition, Zambada challenged the legality of his arrest, requesting to be tried in Mexico instead.
Thanks.
