Mexico’s Sheinbaum to Reinforce National Sovereignty Amid U.S. Cartel Crackdown

mexico’s sheinbaum to reinforce national sovereignty amid u.s. cartel crackdown

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has announced plans to propose constitutional reforms aimed at reinforcing the country’s sovereignty. The move follows the U.S. designation of several Mexican cartels as foreign terrorist organizations, which could set the stage for U.S. military actions on Mexican soil.

At a press conference, Sheinbaum emphasized that Mexico will not tolerate any foreign interference, asserting that the country’s sovereignty over land, water, sea, and airspace remains non-negotiable. She said, “The people of Mexico, under no circumstances, will accept interventions or acts that harm the integrity, independence, and sovereignty of the nation.”

In response to growing concerns over U.S. surveillance, including drone flights over Mexican territory, Sheinbaum has proposed reforms to Articles 39 and 40 of Mexico’s Constitution. These changes would restrict foreign intervention in legal investigations or prosecutions without Mexico’s express consent.

Sheinbaum also criticized the U.S. decision to label certain Mexican cartels as terrorist organizations, calling it an action taken without consultation with her government. “This is not an opportunity for the U.S. to invade our sovereignty,” she said, adding that Mexico seeks collaboration, not subordination or interference.

Additionally, Sheinbaum is pushing for reforms targeting the illicit trade of weapons into Mexico, particularly from the U.S. These efforts aim to curb the flow of firearms, which have been a major source of power for criminal groups throughout Latin America.
